Nicely put. Thanks for promoting the idea of being debt free! It's a new concept to far too many of this generation. But, all that and not a word of "credit" to Dave Ramsey and his "baby steps"? For all kinds of reasons, the $1,000 emergency fund comes first. And by the way, why even think about a "credit level" (#5)? The goal is to get out of debt. If you don't plan to incur more debt, you don't CARE what your level or score is. If a company wants to ding you for a low score because you have no debt, fire them and go some where else. Find someone who does manual underwriting. Someone will be happy to do business with a debt free client.

[...] Debt Resources posts an article that explains the truth behind debt settlement companies. Luckily, I had a family member who was able to educate me on some of the less-known facts about Debt Settlement Companies; the things they of course don’t include in their advertisements! Facts like how much more you’ll end up paying in the end. Information about the fact that none of your creditors start getting paid until they’ve gotten to put their fare share in their pockets. As I looked more into the truth about some of the fine print of these Debt Settlement companies, I remember feeling very relieved that I came across that information before signing the dotted line.
Between me and my husband we've had over 20,000 in debt and had to use a company to get out of it. We made sure it was legitimate through use of the BBB lookup.

The two biggest ways I'm cutting my monthly bill every month is that I cut my cable and am using a prepaid cell phone service. The cable was easy to get rid of, I just had no use for it. I was never home enough to justify the expense. I get a great HD signal with my rabbit ears, good enough for the news in the morning and at night. Using a prepaid cell phone was a little harder for me. I had to switch from my glorious iPhone and downgraded to a Samsung phone with a slideout keyboard. My Net10 service is pretty good, I haven't had much trouble. I believe they use Verizon towers for service so it's reliable.
